In Missouri, teens as young as 15 1/2 can apply for a temporary motorcycle instruction permit. This permit allows them to begin learning the rules of the road while under certain restrictions. Applicants must pass the Class M written knowledge test, and if they don’t already hold a driver’s license, they also need to pass the Class F test.
According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, teens must also meet the Graduated Driver License (GDL) requirements. These include restrictions on nighttime driving and passenger limits. The permit costs $3.50 and does not require taking the Motorcycle Rider Training Course (MRTC), though completing one may make your child a safer rider. They can take the on-bike skills test with the Missouri State Highway Patrol or an approved MRTC provider when ready. A Class M motorcycle license is $10 for a three-year permit or $20 for a six-year license.
Before riding legally, new motorcyclists must pass specific exams. These include:
Though the MRTC is not mandatory for all, it can substitute the skills test when completed through an approved provider. This option offers practical, hands-on training that reinforces safety fundamentals.
Being familiar with the Missouri Motorcycle Operator Manual before testing can be helpful. This manual outlines all laws and expectations, and reviewing it gives young riders a foundation for the written portion. Additionally, mock exams are available online and can be a prep tool.
No matter your age, securing a motorcycle permit in Missouri starts with passing the written Class M test. Those without a driver’s license must also pass the Class F test. You’ll need proof of identity, Missouri residency, and legal presence in the U.S.
Applicants under 18 must meet GDL criteria and have parental approval. Once the permit is obtained, riders must observe restrictions such as no riding after dark, no passengers, and only operating during supervised practice or testing.
The state applies stricter guidelines for applicants younger than 16. While 15 1/2 is the minimum age for obtaining a permit, no one under 16 may receive a full motorcycle endorsement without first complying with all permit restrictions and timeframes.
They must complete the GDL stages, including holding the permit for at least 182 days, completing 40 hours of supervised driving (including 10 at night), and maintaining a clean driving record. This gradual process is designed to prepare minors thoroughly for real-world conditions.
Riders 16 and older have slightly more flexibility. Once the written test is passed, they can hold an instruction permit or enroll in MRTC for a more structured education.
They may apply for the Class M license upon passing the skills test or completing an approved safety course. At this stage, parental approval is still required until age 18, and GDL restrictions apply unless the rider is over 18. These drivers are typically more experienced behind the wheel of a car, making the transition to a motorcycle smoother but still not without risk.
As a parent, you’re both a supporter and a gatekeeper. Missouri law grants parents significant authority in their teen’s journey toward motorcycle licensure. Until age 18, your signature is required on all permit and license applications.
According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, you also have the right to revoke your approval using Form 4811. In addition, you may impose more stringent limits than the state requires. For example, restricting riding during poor weather or requiring completion of the MRTC before allowing them to apply for a license.
Evaluate your teen’s maturity level, driving behavior, and willingness to follow rules. Talk openly about the serious responsibilities of operating a motorcycle. Lay out family rules regarding helmet use, curfews, and communication expectations.
After a motorcycle accident, your immediate steps can significantly affect your health, safety, and legal rights. Whether your child was injured while learning to ride or involved in a crash as a licensed motorcyclist, taking swift and informed action is key.
Accidents involving teens can become especially complex, as liability and age-related restrictions often influence outcomes. Legal guidance can help protect your child’s rights and ensure you’re not left covering costs that should be compensated.
Understanding your options early can help your family navigate the situation more confidently if another driver was at fault or there are disputes over liability.
Starting the journey toward motorcycle independence is exciting, but safety and preparation must come first. There’s a lot to consider, from understanding legal obligations to handling the aftermath of an accident. Proper support can make a difference when navigating a stressful and complex situation.
